Introduction

Greece became a part of the Federation Cup in the year 1968 and till 1991 was an integral part of the World Group. Greece had maintained its position in the World Group and it was a major setback for the team when it was relegated to the Europe/Africa zone in 1992. Since then Greece has been a part of the Europe/Africa zone and since then has never qualified for the World Group. After being in the Europe/Africa zone, Greece has been shifting from Group A to E after every edition of the Federation Cup. In the year 2000 Greece was a part of the Group 1 B but. However, due to some dismal performances, Greece slipped to an even lower group. Greece at the 2001 Federation Cup was a part of the Group 1 D.

Greece at the 2001 Federation Cup competed against nations like Bulgaria, Luxembourg, Denmark and Israel. In the first round Greece was pitted against Bulgaria and defeated it by a scoreline of 2-1. In the second round robin Greece defeated Luxembourg with the same scoreline of 2-1. The third round robin witnessed the most thumping victory for Greece, where it defeated Denmark by margin of 3-0. However, Greece had a surprising loss to Israel in its last round robin. Israel defeated Greece by a margin of 2-0 to the surprise of the Greek fans and the experts.

Greece at the 2001 Federation Cup displayed an improved performance as compared to its performance in the 2000 Federation Cup. With three wins out of four round robin matches, Greece’s rankings were boosted extensively. Greece shot to the Group I A of the Europe/Africa zone for the 2002 Federation Cup. This shift in the ranking made the Greek fans happy and they hoped that their team would continue to give excellent performances so as to qualify for the World Group.
