Georgia at the 2001 Federation Cup

Federation Cup is the women’s equivalent of the Davis Cup. Like Davis Cup all the participating national teams compete in the tournament from different regional zones but unlike Davis Cup, Federation Cup has two World Groups. Georgia made its first appearance in Federation Cup in 1994. Georgia captured attention on its debut, making the Europe – Africa quarterfinals. They showed enormous talent on their way to the quarterfinals. ITF conducted 39th edition of the tournament in 2001 that included total 90 national teams. Georgia at the 2001 Federation Cup was among these 90 participating nation.

Georgia at the 2001 Federation Cup participated in the tournament from Europe – Africa Zone and was placed in group 2 along with Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Egypt, Georgia, Ireland, Kenya, Latvia, Lesotho, Lithuania, Malta, Moldova, Morocco, Portugal, Tunisia and Turkey. Delivering a crushing 3-0 victory over Malta in the first round robin tie at Belek – Antalya clay court, Georgia started off in style. Their second tie was against Latvia on the same clay surface. Georgia did not miss to execute a 3-0 victory over Latvia in the second round robin tie. It was their second victory in the tournament. In the last round robin tie Georgia extended their winning streak to cruise past Ireland 3-0. Thus Georgia easily cleared the round robin hurdle.

Georgia at the 2001 Federation Cup produced brilliant game. They won all the ties with stunning ease. Georgia’s unrivalled serve and perfectly angled groundstrokes were enough to put their opponents in the dust. Georgia did not lose a single match throughout the tournament and booked a well deserved group 1 place in the 2002 Federation Cup.
