Colombia at the 2001 Federation Cup

Federation Cup is the biggest sporting event in women’s tennis. Like Davis Cup, it is also a team event and is played between national teams. Federation Cup kicked off in the year 1963 to mark the 50th anniversary of ITF (International Tennis Federation). In the beginning, all the teams would compete in the same World Group. These day top 16 nations compete in the elite World Group while other nations participate in the tournament from different regional zones. The 2001 Federation Cup was remembered for some of the most exciting matches. It was the 39th edition of the tournament. In this edition top 16 nations were divided into two pools and winners met in the finals.

Colombia started its Fed Cup journey in 1972. Colombia at the 2001 Federation Cup was among 90 participating nations.

Colombia at the 2001 Federation Cup participated in the tournament from American Zone and was placed in Group 1 along with Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Uruguay and Venezuela. Colombia played its first tie of the tournament against Venezuela. They lost the first tie by a margin 1-2. Their second tie was against Uruguay. Colombia rallied back to beat Uruguay 2-1in the second tie and kept their hopes alive. In the third round robin tie, Colombia once again put up spectacular performance and carved out a 2-1 victory over Mexico. But Dominican Republic brought Colombia’s challenge to an end, cruising to a 3-0 victory.

Colombia at the 2001 Federation Cup could not put up satisfactory showing. Out of 4 ties they played, they could register victory in 2 ties. Having lost the first tie to Venezuela, they stormed back to beat Uruguay and Mexico but lost their rhythm in the last tie against Dominican Republic and was bundled out of the tournament.
