Introduction

The Federation Cup is one of the biggest women tennis tournaments played world over. The Fed Cup was launched by International Tennis Federation, marking its 50th inaugural celebration in 1963. Hazel Wightman deserves the credit for working out the initial plan as the exclusive competitive games for the women tennis teams. Initially her idea was not supported by anybody. Afterwards, Hazel found two admirers in Nell Hopman and Mary Hare, who made all possible efforts to bring it in reality. The International Tennis Federation (ITF), took note of the great research work done by Hare, which noted positive responses from all corners.

 

During commencing year there was participation of 16 nations, rising up 73 teams by the year 1976. The name Federation Cup was modified to Fed Cup in 1995. The Federation Cup has presented the worlds top players of the stature of Lesley Turner, Darlene Hard, Margaret Smith and Billie Jean King, on the courts, who turned out the Grand Slams champions. Bulgaria produced its best performance in the years 1983 and 1985, which saw them up in the semifinals. Bulgaria at the 2001 Federation Cup remains in Group I, Euro/African Zone. Bulgaria stands as the significant veterans, having made first appearance in 1966.
