Introduction

The Federation Cup is the most renowned sporting event in the women’s tennis. In the year 1963 this tournament was flagged off and United States became the first winners of this tournament. As compared to Davis Cup, Federation Cup is also governed by the International Tennis Federation. The 2001 Federation Cup was one of the most important events in the women’s tennis. There were about 90 teams in this competition and Belgium at the 2001 Federation Cup was one of them. Belgium made its debut in this competition in the inaugural year of the Federation Cup that is 1963. Till date they have not make to the finals of the Federation Cup but have managed to reach until the second round of the world group on few occasions.

Belgium at the 2001 Federation Cup was in the world group Pool B along with the teams like Australia, Germany and Spain. Belgium had a great start as they won all their pool matches; they defeated Australia, Germany and Spain by the same score. Belgium dominated in all the matches they played against Australia, Spain and Germany. They did not even concede a single game in those matches as they won it by the score of 3:0. This was an exciting moment for Belgium as they reached the finals for the first time in such a splendid fashion. In the final they played against Russia, in that match Belgium looked little tensed but very soon they did over come their emotions as they defeated Russia and emerged champions for the very first time.
