Introduction

The Federation Cup is one of biggest yearly international events of women tennis. It has remained a challenging and championship gala of competitive matches. It has produced the all time greats and attracted the newcomers as well. In 1963 it was launched by International Tennis Federation, which was marking its 50th inaugural celebration. One lady Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman has been a genius behind the emergence of Federation Cup. The trophy Federation Cup, was rechristened as Fed Cup in 1995, has seen the women stalwarts of the stature of Darlene King, Billie Jean King, Margaret Smith and Lesley Turner on its centre courts, who have hammered great knocks in the Grand Slams. Australia remains at the second highest place as regards the success of winning titles in the Fed Cup. It has won seven titles in all; however it has not succeeded in winning the title since 1974.
