Introduction

The Federation Cup is one highest pedestal of women tennis tournaments. This is a gala of events organized yearly during a period of one week at the international venues. It was launched in the year 1963 by International Tennis Federation, which was then celebrating its 50th inaugural ceremony as well. Hazel Wightman deserves kudos for her initial plan in the second decade of the twentieth century. In the later decades, the efforts of Nell Hopman, wife of the legendary Australian Davis Cup champion and Mary Hare made it come in reality. Mary Hare prepared detailed reports collecting responses the world over and submitted to the International Tennis Federation (ITF), which having impressed by Mary’s reports launched the Federation Cup.

 

The Federation Cup has witnessed the tennis stars of the stature of Billie Jean King, Darlene Hard, Margaret Smith and Lesley Turner on its courts, who toned the Grand Slams. Antigua & Barbuda at the 2001 Federation Cup was American Zone Group II player. Antigua & Barbuda has been unfortunate throughout its span of career. It lost its 24 Fed Cup ties and won the sole tie opposite Barbados by 2-1 in the year 2001. Antigua & Barbuda made its first appearance in the year 1997.

Antigua & Barbuda at the 2001 Federation Cup registered its team through American Zone Group II. Antigua & Barbuda played three pools C preliminary Robin Rounds in the present tournaments. Except the marginal fights and wins of single sets against Panama and Bermuda they lost all of them. However, in the Finals of the C-pool, they came up winning it opposite Barbados by 2-1.

Still, opposite Panama and Bermuda it offered good play to win single sets. They were again offered an event of Final which they won in the pool-C opposite Barbados by 2-1.
