Introduction

The Federation Cup is one of the glorious tennis event of women teams played yearly at international levels. It was launched in the year 1963 by International Tennis Federation, marking its 50th inaugural celebration. Hazel Hotchkiss Wightman thought of the initial plan in the year 1919 and also floated a trophy for the then contesting strong teams of United States and Great Britain teams, having found no response to her plan. Subsequently Nell Hopman and Mary Hardwick Hare having impressed by Hazel’s plan, made all out efforts to bring it in reality. The International Tennis Federation (ITF), took note of the great research work done by Hare, which noted positive responses from all corners.

 

During commencing year there was participation of 16 nations, which eventually rose to 73 teams by the year 1976. Initial trophy was known as Federation Cup, which was renamed to Fed Cup in 1995. The Federation Cup has witnessed the tennis stars of the stature of Billie Jean King, Darlene Hard, Margaret Smith and Lesley Turner on its courts, who toned the Grand Slams. Algeria’s biggest ever achievement is in reaching third in the round robins in the years 2001 & 2002. Algeria has never elevated upper to Euro/Africa Zone Group II. Algeria at the 2001 Federation Cup was Euro/African Zone Group II player.

Performance of Algeria at the 2001 Federation Cup

Algeria at the 2001 Federation Cup registered its team through Euro/African Zone Group II. Algeria entered into its serial of round robins listed opposite Morocco, Portugal and Finland. Algeria marked its year’s play on winning note against Morocco in the maiden robin round. However, in the next two events it was beaten by the opponent teams outperforming Algeria. The score was 0-3 against Algeria.

Algeria at the 2001 Federation Cup listed its team through Euro/African Zone Group II. Algeria which entered into the Federation Cup horizons since 1997, has achieved a marginal breakthrough in the present tournament. In the order of the preliminary round robins opposite Morocco, Portugal and Finland, Algeria successfully won over Morocco. Algeria thus achieved their success by 2-1 opposite Morocco in the first round. In the next two rounds however, it lost to both Portugal and Finland by 0-3.
