Introduction

The Federation cup was the most important tournament in women’s tennis between the national teams. The 2000 Federation Cup was the 38th edition of the tournament. Altogether, 100 nations took part in the tournament, which was a record. Several changes occurred in the World Group. Rather than two World Groups, there was one comprising of thirteen teams. There were three Round Robin pools in this group. The winner of each pool joined the defending champions in a knockout bracket.

 
Performance of 2000 Federation Cup

In the 2000 Federation Cup, from Group I of the American Zone, Argentina was promoted to World Group Play-off, while Chile and Cuba were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Dominican Republic and Ecuador were promoted to Group I. From Group I of the Asia / Oceania Zone, Japan was promoted to World Group Play-off, while Hong Kong and Singapore were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Pacific Oceania and Uzbekistan were promoted to Group I. From Group I of the Europe / Africa Zone, Hungary was promoted to World Group Play-off, while Finland, Morocco, Latvia and Turkey were relegated to Group II. From Group II, Denmark, Macedonia, Estonia and Yugoslavia were promoted to Group I.

In the 2000 Federation Cup, the Pool A of the World Group comprised of Croatia, Germany, Italy and Spain. Out of these, Spain advanced to Play-off. Pool B consisted of Austria, Czech Republic, Slovakia and Switzerland. Of these, Czech Republic advanced to Play-off. Pool C comprised of Australia, Belgium, France and Russia. Out of these, Belgium advanced to Play-off. The ties were contested at Mandalay Bay Events Center. This was situated in Las Vegas, NV, United States. The surface was Indoor Carpet Courts. In the first round, the United States defeated Belgium by a score of 2-1. Spain defeated Czech Republic by a score of 2-1. In the final, the United States defeated Spain by a score of 5-0. This was the seventeenth time that the United States won this title.
