Introduction

The Fed Cup was started in the year 1963 by the international Tennis Federation on its 50th anniversary. On that inaugural year there were only 16 teams which participated from various nations. The 2000 Fed Cup was one of the most recognized sporting events in the women’s tennis. There were about 100 teams taking part in this year’s competition and Sweden at the 2000 Fed Cup was one of them. Sweden started its Fed Cup campaign in the year 1964 and till date its best performance has come on three occasions when it reached the world group quarterfinals in 1977, 1980 and 1988.

 
Performance of Sweden at the 2000 Federation Cup

Sweden at the 2000 Fed Cup was in the Euro/African zone group I along with the teams like Belarus, Bulgaria, Finland, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Luxembourg, Morocco, Netherlands, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, South Africa, Turkey and Ukraine. In the first round robin match Sweden played against Bulgaria, in this match Sweden were given a torrid time by the Bulgarian’s as Sweden was defeated by the score of 2:1. Then in the match against Netherlands Sweden could not even win a single game as they were defeated in that match by the score of 3:0.

In the last match against Turkey, Sweden played really good as they defeated Turkey by the score of 2:1. Therefore after losing two matches out of three Sweden was stationed in the same group I for the 2001 Fed Cup.

The overall performance of Sweden at the 2000 Fed Cup was poor enough. Out of the three matches Sweden played they could only win a single match as they lost the remaining two.
