South Africa at the 2000 Federation Cup

The 2000 Fed Cup was the 38th edition of the most popular sporting events in the women’s tennis. There were about 100 teams which took part in this competition and South Africa at the 2000 Fed Cup was one of them. South Africa began playing in the Fed Cup since this tournament was started in the year 1963. They have been the winners of this competition on one occasion and that is in 1972 where they defeated Great Britain in the finals. Also the next year they reached the finals for the second successive time but this time they lost the finals to Australia.

South Africa at the 2000 Fed Cup was in the Euro/African zone group I along with the teams like Bulgaria, Belarus, Finland, Hungary, Greece, Great Britain, Latvia, Luxembourg, Poland, Israel, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Ukraine. Morocco, Netherlands and Turkey. South Africa played against Greece in the first round robin match, in this match South Africa played really well as Greece looked threatening.

But South Africa did well to stop Greece from wining this match; South Africa defeated Greece by the score of 2:1. In the next match against Latvia, South Africa had no trouble at all as they routed Latvia by the score of 3:0.

Then in their last round robin match against Hungary, South Africa was defeated even though Africa had showed a great display in that match. Hungary won the match by the score of 2:1. As a result of this loss South Africa did not qualify for the next round and thus they remained in the same group I for the 2001 Fed Cup.

The overall performance of South Africa at the 2000 Fed Cup was satisfactory because after wining the first two round robin matches they lost the third won. And this loss cost them a lot as they were positioned in the same group for the next year’s competition.
