Puerto Rico at the 2000 Federation Cup

The 2000 Fed Cup was the 38th edition of the most prestigious sporting events in the women’s tennis. From this year onwards the world group was changed from two groups to three Pool groups as Pool A, Pool B and Pool C. There were record number of 100 teams which participated in this competition and Puerto Rico at the 1998 Fed Cup was one of them. Puerto Rico began its Fed Cup campaign in the year 1992 and in this year’s competition they were appearing for the seventh time. Till date their best performance has come in the year 1995 where they won all their round robin matches to get qualified for the group I in the American zone.

Puerto Rico at the 2000 Fed Cup was in the American zone group II along with the teams like Antigua & Barbuda, Bahamas, Barbados, Bermuda, Bolivia, Costa Rica, Dominican Republic, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Jamaica, Panama and Trinidad & Tobago.

In the round robin matches Puerto Rico performed brilliantly as they outclassed its opponents with out conceding a single game. Puerto Rico defeated Bermuda, Guatemala and Jamaica in the three round robins matches they played and the score was 3:0.

Then in the first round they had to play against Dominican Republic in that match both the teams fought well and in the end it was the Dominican Republic who was glorious. They defeated Puerto Rico in that match by the score of 2:1. Then in the finals Puerto Rico played against Bolivia in this match Bolivia proved to be much stronger for Puerto Ricans as they lost the match by the score of 3:0 to Bolivia. As a result Puerto Rico had to remain in the same group II for the 2001 Fed Cup.

The over all performance of Puerto Rico at the 2000 Fed Cup was adequate, after wining its first three round robin matches they were defeated in the first round and the final round matches. This performance was not so bad but they did not keep up with the same tempo in all the matches and as a result they did not qualify for the group I.
