Portugal at the 2000 Federation Cup

The Fed Cup was started in the year 1963 when the ITF were celebrating its 50th anniversary. The 2000 Fed Cup was the 38th edition of the most recognized sporting events in the women’s tennis. There were about 100 teams participating in this competition and Portugal at the 2000 Fed Cup was one of them. Portugal began its Fed Cup campaign since 1968 and this year it is their 12th appearance in the competition. Till date their best performance has come on their debut where they had reached the world group second round.

Portugal at the 2000 Fed Cup was in the Euro/African zone group II along with the teams like Algeria, Armenia, Botswana, Cyprus, Georgia, Denmark, Egypt, Iceland, Ireland, Kenya, Macedonia, Moldova, Malta, Tunisia and Yugoslavia. Portugal had a good start this year as they trashed both Lesotho and Madagascar in the first two round robins match. Portugal played really well to out class these teams by the score of 3:0. Then in the next round robin match against Moldova Portugal struggle a bit as they lost this match to Moldova by the score of 2:1. Portugal came back well in the next match against Algeria, although both were trying hard it was Portugal who registered a victory in this match by the score of 2:1. Then in the match against Estonia Portugal lost the first game and after that they did not finish the second game and as a result Estonia was adjourned as victorious in that match. Therefore after all the round robin matches it was concluded that Portugal remains in the same group for the 2001 Fed Cup.

The overall performance of Portugal at the 2000 Fed Cup was satisfactory, although they had won three of their matches out of five they were not promoted instead they were given a place in the group II B as they were placed in group II D this year.
