The Fed Cup has been devised as the women’s version of the acclaimed Davis Cup. It began in 1963 as a tournament between the United States and Great Britain. The participating countries played in the qualifying stage against themselves, resulting from which the entrants to the World group stage were decided. The 2000 championship was the 38th edition of the Fed Cup. New Zealand started its international tennis career in 1965 with a good opening performance. A total of 95 nations participated in the tournament. New Zealand at the 2000 Fed Cup was one of the poor teams.
