Malta at the 2000 Federation Cup

Malta at the 2000 Federation Cup took part in the Federation cup for the first time in 1986. The best performance of the country was in the year 1986, when it qualified for the main draw, in the previous format.

Malta at the 2000 Federation Cup took part in Group II of the Europe / Africa Zone. The other countries in this group were Algeria, Armenia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Botswana, Cyprus, Denmark, Egypt, Estonia, Georgia, Iceland, Ireland, Kenya, Lesotho, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mauritius, Moldova, Portugal, Tunisia and Yugoslavia.

Malta played four Round Robin matches. For all the matches, the host was Portugal and the surface was Clay – outdoor. On 28 March 2000, the match was against Ireland. Malta was defeated by Ireland by a score of 1-2. On 29 March 2000, the match was against Macedonia. Malta was defeated by Macedonia by a score of 1-2. On 30 March 2000, the match was against Kenya. Malta defeated Kenya by a score of 3-0. On 31 March 2000, the match was against Mauritius. Malta defeated Mauritius by a score of 3-0.

Malta at the 2000 Federation Cup could display an average sort of performance. Out of the four Round Robin matches, it lost the initial two matches and won the latter two matches. Also, the matches were lost by a very narrow margin. But, the matches which were won were clean sweeps of all the three matches. Considering that Malta was playing in the Federation cup for almost fifteen years, a better performance was expected from the team. But, the country failed to fulfill the aspirations of the supporters.
