Cyprus at the 2000 Federation Cup

Cyprus entered the Fed Cup in the year 1995 and has played a total of 7 years’ Fed Cup competing in 30 ties. Eleni Pilava Papanicolaou made the most number of total wins. She has made the total number of doubles wins, has played most number of ties and has played in Fed Cup for most number of years on behalf of Cyprus. She is also part of the best doubles team from Cyprus. Daphne Nicolatou made the most number of singles wins. Cyprus’ first winning tie was in 1999 against Kenya after loosing the first 19 Davis cup ties. The highest level it has competed up to now is in the Europe/Africa Zone Group 2. Cyprus at the 2000 Federation Cup played from the Europe/Africa Group 2 pool C completing five ties of the robin round. In the first round robin it fell at the hands of Egypt 0-3. It was thrashed by Yugoslavia in the second round robin from the Group to the same fateful score of 0-3. The third tie of Europe/Africa Group 2 pool C round robin brought Lithuania face to face with Cyprus. Cyprus was consistent with its loosing style- 0-3. The second last tie for Cyprus was against Georgia. Here too the score remained the same 0-3. It must have got tired of losing the same way and so in the last tie which was against Armenia it lost 0-1 and the rest of two matches were not played.

The performance of Cyprus at the 2000 Federation Cup was extraordinarily bad as it did not even win a single game of a tie, leave alone a winning a tie. This pathetic performance put Cyprus on a lower rung in the Fed Cup ranking system. It did not play up to 2004. It returned to the Fed Cup in the Fed Cup only in the year 2005, only to play in the Group 3 of Europe Zone.
