Bulgaria at the 2000 Federation Cup

Bulgaria at the 2000 Federation Cup participated from the Group I of the Europe/Africa zone, the team gave its debut performance in the competition in the year 1966 and thus the team so far had gathered much experience in the competition. The best performance of the Bulgarian team was for two times one was in 1983 and the other one was in the year 1985 and on both the occasions the team had managed to reach in the semifinals. In the 2000 competition the team had to play in the Round Robin ties.

The performance of Bulgaria at the 2000 Federation Cup began on 16th May and ended on the 18th May and all the ties were played in Spain on the outdoor hard surface. The first tie of the Bulgarian team was against the team of Sweden and both the teams fought a very close tie but ultimately the Bulgarian team finished the round by a score of 2-1 against Sweden. In the second tie against the team of Turkey the performance of the Bulgarian team improved to great extent and the team defeated the Turkish team completely by a score of 3-0. The third tie of the Bulgarian team was played against the team of the Netherlands and the team had the good chance of clearing the Round Robin pool. But the Netherlands team played so aggressively and powerfully that the Bulgarian team could not win a single match in the tie and had to give in. The Bulgarian team lost their third tie by a score of 0-3 and thus had to remain in their group for the next year’s competition.

Bulgaria at the 2000 Federation Cup won two ties but could not win the last tie which could have earned them a promotion. The tie against the Venezuelan team was the stumbling block for the Bulgarian team.
