Zimbabwe at the 1994 Federation Cup

The Federation Cup is known to be one of the most booming competitions in the women's tennis. This tournament originated in 1963 when the ITF agreed to seize a women's competition on the appeal from Mary Hare of United States. Unlike Davis Cup Federation Cup is also governed by the ITF. The 1994 Federation Cup was the 32nd edition of the most important competition in the women's tennis. There were about 73 teams taking part in this competition and Zimbabwe at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of them. Zimbabwe first took part in this competition in the year 1966 but it played as Rhodesia until 1976 and there after as Zimbabwe.

Their best performance has come on their debut in this competition when they reached the world group for the only time till date.

Zimbabwe at the 1994 Federation Cup was in the Euro/Africa zone group I along with the teams like Austria, Georgia,Ireland, Slovenia, Slovakia, Turkey and Belgium. In the first match of the round robin Zimbabwe played against Slovenia, Zimbabwe were struggling as they were trounced by Slovenia by the score of 3:0. Starting so badly Zimbabwe were hoping for a tough tie against Ireland but it was not as Zimbabwe performed excellently to defeat Ireland by the score of 2:1. Then in the first round match against Georgia, Zimbabwe again displayed weakly as they got defeated by the score of 3:0. As a result of this Zimbabwe were relegated to the group II for the 1995 Federation Cup.

The over all performance of Zimbabwe at the 1994 Federation Cup was outrageous as they just manage a single win out of three matches they played. Lack of consistency and low confidence level in their approach has put them in this condition, if they over come these problems they may become a good team in future.
