Introduction

The Federation Cup was commenced on the 17th June 1963 at the Queen's Club, London. This Fed Cup was a counterpart to Davis Cup men's competition and both these tournaments are governed by the International Tennis Federation. As in Davis Cup Federation Cup is also dominated by United States and Australia as they have won the title for 17 and 7 respectively. They have also been runners-up for about 9 and 10 times respectively. The 1994 Federation Cup was the 32nd edition of the most recognized sporting events in women's tennis.

There were about 73 teams taking part in this competition and Syria at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of them. This year Syria was making its debut in this tournament through the Asia/Oceania zone.

Performance of Syria at the 1994 Federation Cup

Syria at the 1994 Federation Cup was in the Asia/Oceania zone group I along with Chinese Taipei, India, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Thailand. In the first round robin match against Philippines Syria had a tough time as they were trounced by the score of 3:0. Their next round robin match was against Chinese Taipei, Syria could not show a good display as this being their first appearance. They lost that match to Chinese Taipei by the score of 3:0. Again in the last match the storey was same India defeated Syria by the same score of 3:0. As a result of a very poor presentation Syria slipped to the group II for the 1995 Federation Cup.

Here’s a summary of the performance of Syria at the 1994 Federation Cup

The over all performance of Syria at the 1994 Federation Cup was repulsive as this being their first year in this competition they were yet to produce a better performance.
