Sri Lanka at the 1994 Federation Cup

The Federation Cup began in the year 1963 as the International Tennis Federation was celebrating its 50th anniversary. As compared to Davis Cup Federation Cup is almost the same but the Fed Cup is the women's tournament. The 1994 Federation Cup was the 32nd edition of the most famed sporting events in the women's tennis. There were about 73 teams taking part in this competition and Sri Lanka at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of them. Sri Lanka started its campaign in the year 1990 and their best performance has come in 1992 and 1993 when they reached the first round of the Asia/Oceania zone.

Sri Lanka at the 1994 Federation Cup was in the Asia/Oceania group I along with the teams like Chinese Taipei, India, Thailand, New Zealand, Singapore, Philippines and Syria. In the first round robin match Sri Lanka had to play against Singapore, Sri Lanka did play well as to trounce Singapore by the score of 3:0. Then in the second round robin match against New Zealand Sri Lanka had a tough time, they were defeated by New Zealand by the score of 2:1. In the last round robin match against Thailand Sri Lanka were not given a single chance of over taking as Thailand defeated Sri Lanka by the score of 3:0. Therefore Sri Lanka was relegated to the group II for the 1995 Federation Cup.

The overall performance of Sri Lanka at the 1994 Federation Cup was not satisfactory as they got demoted to group II. Although they started well in the first match defeating Singapore with ease they lost the next two matches as they could manage to win a single game out of six.
