Romania at the 1994 Federation Cup

Romania made its first appearance in the much-coveted tennis tournament for women in the year 1966. Winning two ties out of four, Romania managed to grab the attention in their very first appearance. Romania Fed Cup team has managed to reach the quarterfinals on five occasions. ITF conducted the 32nd edition of Federation Cup in 1994. Romania at the 1994 Federation Cup tried out their strength from Europe/African Zone.

Romania at the 1994 Federation Cup exhibited high class performance in the round robin ties. Defeating Norway and Hungary 3-0, Romania passed the round robin contest with flying colors. These victories boosted Romania's morale and placed them in the knock round of Europe/African Zone. Romania once again faced Hungary in the knock out round but this time it was not easy go for them. Romania had to toil before scratching 2-1 victory over Hungary in the first knock out round. The next round was the quarterfinals. Belarus thrashed Romania 2-1 in the quarterfinals and advanced to the semifinals.

Romania at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in Europe /African Zone along with Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Egypt, Estonia, Georgia, Great Britain, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Israel, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine and Zimbabwe. Romania made promising start winning all the matches against Norway and Hungary and secured a well deserved knock out round place. Their talent was put to test in the knock out round. Romania tried their best to save the tie against Belarus in the quarterfinals but failed and was ousted from the tournament. But making the quarterfinal, Romania certainly won acclaim.
