Portugal at the 1994 Federation Cup

Federation Cup is one of the biggest sporting events in women's tennis. It began in the year 1963. Portugal made its debut in Federation Cup in 1968 from World Group. Portugal got eliminated in the first round at the hands of France. From 1969 to 1976, Portugal did not compete in the tournament. Their performance has been very ordinary and they could never reach round of 16. Portugal's first victory in the tournament came in the year 1979 when they defeated Chinese Taipei 2-1 in the first round of World Group Consolation Round.

Federacao Portugesa de Tenis is the governing board of Portugal Fed Cup team. The 1994 Federation Cup was the 32nd version of the tournament. Total 73 nations made their appearance in the tournament from different regional zones. Portugal at the 1994 Federation Cup was amongst these 73 participating nations.

Portugal at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in Europe/African Zone Draw B. Portugal played total two round robin ties and one knock round tie. In the first round robin tie Portugal went down to Austria 0-3 Freizeit Park, Bad Waltersdorf, Austria. Their next round robin tie was against Malta and it was necessary for Portugal to win the tie to advance to the knock out round. Portugal did not miss the opportunity to open their account in the tournament and executed fine 3-0 victory over Malta. In the knock out round Portugal could not overcome Belarus and suffered 1-2 defeat.

Portugal at the 1994 Federation Cup reached the Draw B knock out round but failed to produce their best. Losing first round robin tie, Portugal bounced back against Malta in the second round robin tie. Portugal's players tried their best in the knock out round against Belarus but after a hard fought struggle they went down 1-2 and thus were ousted from the tournament.
