Introduction

The Federation Cup started in 1963 with a view to mark the anniversary of the International Tennis Federation. It began as championship between Great Britain and United States, being the equivalent of men's Davis Cup. The competing nations initially played in the qualifying rounds amongst themselves after which depending on their performance, were either knocked out of the tournament or promoted to the World group stage. The 1994 championship was the 32nd edition of the Federation Cup. Egypt started its international tennis career in 1986. Out of the 73 participating teams, Egypt at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of the poor performing teams.

Performance of Egypt at the 1994 Federation Cup

Egypt at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the Europe/Africa zone. Some of the nations in this zone were Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Estonia, Georgia, Great Britain, Greece, Slovenia and Turkey. In the first round robin match against Israel, Egypt lost dismally by a scoreline of 0-3. The next match featured clash of Egypt with Belarus. This match too Egypt lost by 0-3 score. Thus a very weak and shaky performance marked the day for Egypt being knocked out from the tournament.

Here’s a summary of the performance of Egypt at the 1994 Federation Cup

Egypt at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the Europe/Africa zone with nations like Austria, Belarus, Belgium, Estonia, Georgia, Great Britain, Greece, Slovenia, Portugal, Tunisia and Luxembourg. The first round robin matched exposed Egyptian weaknesses in front of its competitors. Egypt lost the contest sheepishly by 0-3 score. The next clash too was given away cheaply by Egypt to Belarus by same score of 0-3. Thus Egypt failed to cover up their loopholes in both the matches. Thus Egypt was kicked out from the 1994 Federation Cup owing to an extremely poor and faminized performance.
