Introduction

The Federation Cup started as an equivalent to the men's Davis Cup tournament. It started from 1963 so as to mark the anniversary of the International Tennis Federation. It began as championship between Great Britain and United States. The competing nations initially played in the qualifying rounds amongst themselves after which depending on their performance, were either knocked out of the tournament or promoted to the World group stage. The 1994 championship was the 32nd edition of the Federation Cup. Ecuador started its international tennis career in 1972. Out of the 73 participating teams, Ecuador at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of the poor performing teams.

Ecuador at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the American zone. In the qualifiers, Ecuador played its first round robin against Jamaica. Ecuador won the contest by a score of 3-0. The next match again featured similar performance by Ecuador, winning over Trinidad and Tobago by 2-1. The next round robin match however resulted in Ecuador loosing to Chile by 1-2. Then, the next round robin clash against Bahamas was won by Ecuador by score of 3-0. The last qualifying tie was unfortunately lost to Cuba by 1-2. This led to the end of quest of Ecuador at the 1994 tournament.

Ecuador at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the American zone. Some of the other teams in this group were Bolivia, Bahamas, Chile, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Jamaica, Uruguay and Venezuela. Ecuador won its round robin matches against Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago and Bahamas. But the crucial defeats at the hands of Chile and Cuba dealt an irreparable loss to the hopes of Ecuador performing well at such a stage. Thus Ecuador was ousted from the 1994 Federation Cup.
