Introduction

The Federation Cup started as means of promoting and providing recognition to the women's professional tennis. It worked on similar lines as that of Davis Cup and is managed by International Tennis Federation. The competing nations initially played in the qualifying rounds amongst themselves after which depending on their performance, were either knocked out of the tournament or promoted to the World group stage. The 1994 championship was the 32nd edition of the Federation Cup. Cuba started its international tennis career in 1991. Out of the 73 participating teams, Cuba at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of the poor performing teams.

Cuba at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the American zone. In the qualifiers, Cuba played its first round robin against Dominican Republic. Cuba won the contest by a score of 3-0. The next match again featured dynamic performance by Cuba, defeating Guatemala comprehensively by 3-0. The next match again resulted in Cuba winning against Bolivia by 2-1. Also, the first round qualifier resulted in Cuba triumphing over Ecuador by 2-1. The Quarterfinal contest of this stage yielded Cuban victory over Mexico by 2-1. This advanced Cuba in the World group round. However, in the first round Cuba lost to Argentina by 0-3.

Cuba at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the American zone. Some of the other teams in this group were Bolivia, Bahamas, Chile, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Ecuador, Jamaica, Uruguay and Venezuela. Cuba was flawless in its performance in the qualifying stage with defeating all its competitors - Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Bolivia, Ecuador and Mexico. Such a well balanced performance pushed Cuba in the World group stage. However, Cuba lost to Argentina by 0-3 in the first round. Thus, having reached upto the World group stage, Cuba failed to capitalize on the situation and thus was departed form the championship.
