Introduction

The Federation Cup has been known for its performance par excellence in women's tennis category. It started from 1963 onwards and is managed by the International Tennis Federation. The competing nations initially played in the qualifying rounds amongst themselves after which depending on their performance, were either knocked out of the tournament or promoted to the World group stage. The 1994 championship was the 32nd edition of the Federation Cup. Costa Rica started its international tennis career in 1992. Out of the 73 participating teams, Costa Rica at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of the poor performing teams.

Costa Rica at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the American zone. Some of the other teams in this group were Bolivia, Bahamas, Chile, Cuba, Ecuador, Jamaica, Uruguay and Venezuela. In the qualifiers, Costa Rica played its first round robin against Paraguay. Costa Rica lost the contest dismally by a score of 0-3.The next match again featured sheepish performance by Costa Rica, loosing to Peru by score of 0-3. The next match however resulted in Costa Rica winning comfortably against El Salvador by 2-1. The next clash was then again lost by Costa Rica to Paraguay by 0-3. This led to the departure of Costa Rica from the 1994 Federation Cup.

Costa Rica at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the American zone. In the qualifying matches, Costa Rica won its only match against El Salvador. The remaining qualifying stage matches were cheaply given away by Costa Rica to its competitors. Costa Rica was defeated by Paraguay and Peru by a huge margin. Costa Ricans failed to recognize their strengths and weaknesses and thus could not play according to their resources and thus were ousted from the tournament.
