Introduction

The most acclaimed championship in women's tennis known as the Federation Cup started in 1963 so as to mark the anniversary of the International Tennis Federation (I.T.F.). This tournament took birth as a women's competition between United States and Great Britain. The participating nations first competed amongst themselves in the qualifying round so as to proceed to the World group stage. The 1994 championship was the 32nd edition of the Federation Cup. Australia started its international women's tennis career in 1963 with an impressive performance.

 

Out of the 73 participating teams, Australia at the 1994 Federation Cup was one of the better teams.

Australia at the 1994 Federation Cup was placed in the World group alongside nations like Canada, Switzerland, Latvia, Poland and many others. In the first round, Australia was matched against Latvia. Australia managed to clinch on a close win by a score of 2-1. This forwarded Australia into the next second round. In second round, Australia met Austria. The competition was stiff which ultimately Australia lost by a close score of 1-2. This led to the ousting of Australia from the tournament.

In the first round, the clash between Australia and Latvia was scheduled. Both the teams played upto their potential and eventually Australia won by 2-1 to advance to the second round. In the second round, Australia was matched against Austria. Even after exercising several brave and dominant attempts, Australia had to loose the contest by 1-2. Thus, a little deficiency on account of Australian hard-work and a bit of misfortune led to a sad and undesirable end of the Australian innings at the 1994 Federation Cup.
