Introduction

The Federation Cup was the most challenging tournament in women's tennis between national teams. The 1992 Federation Cup was the 30th edition of this tournament. Overall, 68 countries took part in this tournament. Qualifying rounds were divided between three regional zones, for the first time. Each zone sent teams to the Main World Group Tournament.

In the 1992 Federation Cup, from the American Zone, Chile and Mexico advanced to the World Group. From the Asia / Oceania Zone, South Korea advanced to the World Group. From the Europe / Africa Zone, South Africa advanced to the World Group. In the quarter finals of the World Group Play-offs, South Africa defeated Mexico by a score of 3-0. Bulgaria defeated Hungary by a score of 2-1. Switzerland defeated Paraguay by a score of 3-0. Finland defeated Great Britain by a score of 2-1.
