Czechoslovakia at the 1981 Federation Cup

The Federation Cup is known to be one of the moat successful competitions in the women's tennis. This tournament originated in 1963 when the ITF agreed to hold a women's competition on the request from Mary Hare of United States. Unlike Davis Cup Federation Cup is also governed by the ITF. The 1981 Federation Cup was the 19th edition of the most important competition in the women's tennis. There were about 32 teams taking part in this competition and Czechoslovakia at the 1981 Federation Cup was one of them.

Czechoslovakia participated in this competition from the day this tournament was introduced that is 1963. Till date their best performance has come in the year 1975 when they won the title for the first time, they defeated Australia by 3:0.

Czechoslovakia at the 1981 Federation Cup was placed in the world group along with teams like Sweden, USSR, Brazil, France, Denmark, West Germany and United States. In the first round of the world group they played Sweden, in this match they played brilliantly as they triumph Sweden by the score of 3:0. Then in the second round against the Soviet Union they lost by the score of 2:1. As a result they had to play in the consolation round. They got a bye in the first round and therefore they played against South Korea in the second round. In this match they performed well to defeat South Korea by the score of 2:1. Then in the quarterfinals match against Hungary they won in style as they trounced Hungary by the score of 3:0. In the semifinals they continued with the same frame of mind as they defeated Italy by the score of 3:0. This win gave them a chance to play in the finals of the consolation round against Brazil. This time they were not able to show a class performance as Brazil defeated them by the score of 2:0.

The overall performance of Czechoslovakia at the 1981 Federation Cup was good enough but it did not take them further in the world group.
