Belgium at the 1981 Federation Cup

Belgium at the 1981 Federation Cup participated at the Federation cup for the first time in 1963which was also the opening year of the competition. In the 1981 event of the Federation Cup the Belgian team could not even get beyond the first round.

Belgium at the 1981 Federation Cup played their matches of the first round against the team of Great Britain and the matches were held on 15th November in Japan on the out door clay court, the challenge of the British team was quite difficult to bear for the Belgian team, the team of Great Britain trounced the Belgian team with a score of 0-3 and the team thus had to play in the world group consolation round. In the first round of the consolation matches the Belgian team met with the team of Canada and the matches were held in Japan, the Belgian team compensating for their loss in the first round of the world group defeated the Canadian team in 3 matches and advanced in the second consolation round. In the second consolation round the Belgian team fought against the team of Israel and the matches were again held on the outdoor clay courts, the Belgian team defeated the team of Israel with a score of 2-1 and headed for the quarterfinals round. In the matches of the quarterfinals round the Belgian team had before them the challenge of the Spanish team, the venue of the matches was the same, the Belgian team so far had played consistently in the consolation round. The Spanish team eventually defeated the Belgian team in 2 matches and thus the challenge of the Belgian team came to an end in the quarterfinals round.

The performance of Belgium at the 1981 Federation Cup was not very poor except for their miserable defeat in the first round of the world group. The Belgian team then compensated for their loss in the 1st round by winning the first two rounds of the consolation rounds in the competition.
