Slovak Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin matches with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Slovak Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the World Group. Following players from Slovak Republic competed in the World Group:

Slovak Republic was placed in the top World Group. Other countries that competed in the World Group were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Participation and Performance of Slovak Republic in the 2006 Davis Cup

Slovak Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup played directly in the 1st round. The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Slovak Republic played the first set of matches against Chile at Medialuna de Rancagua, Chile. Slovak Republic had to face disappointment in these matches. Fernando Gonzalez from Chile defeated Michal Mertinak from Slovakia by 7-6, 7-6 and 6-3. Chile’s Nicolas Massu defeated Dominik Hrbaty by 6-7, 6-3, 6-1 and 7-6. Pair of Chile, Fernando Gonzalez and Nicolas Massu defeated pair of Slovak Republic, Michal Mertinak and Lukas Lacko by 6-2, 7-5, 3-6 and 6-4. Chile’s Paul Capdeville defeated Victor Bruthans from Slovak Republic by 6-4, 7-5. Lukas Lacko defeated Adrian Garcia by 6-4, 4-1. Thus, Chile won 4 matches, while Slovak Republic was able to win just single match. Slovak Republic played the matches in the World Group Play-off. The matches were played from 22nd to 24th September 2006. Slovak Republic played the matches against Belgium at National Tennis Centre, Bratislava, Slovak Republic. Players from Slovak Republic showed poor performance. They were defeated by Belgium in 3 matches. They could win 2 matches.

Slovak Republic at the 2006 Davis Cup showed very poor performance. It resulted in relegation of Slovak Republic to Group I in 2007.
