Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Singapore at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Asia/Oceania Zone. Singapore’s team included following players:

  • Kok-Huen Kam
  • Daniel Heryanta Dewandaka
  • Min Wee
  • Stanley Armando

The participating teams in the Group III were Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Players from Singapore put poor performance.

Participation and Performance of Singapore in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 8 teams to compete in the Group III. They were divided into 2 groups. Singapore at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Philippines. Group B included Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Bangladesh. The matches were played at Manila Polo Club, Makati City, Manila, Philippines. They were held from 19th to 23rd July. Singapore played the first set of matches against Vietnam. Singapore’s players could not play well. They were defeated by Vietnam in 2 matches. They could win single match. The matches between Singapore and Philippines were played on 20th July. Singapore had to face disappointment in these matches. They lost all the three matches against Philippines. Singapore’s players showed poor performance in the matches against Sri Lanka. The matches were played on 21st July. Sri Lanka defeated Singapore in all the matches. Singapore played the matches in the 5th to 8th Play-off round. Singapore played the matches against Bahrain on 22nd July. Singapore’s players played with determination. They won 2 matches against Bahrain. Bahrain was able to win single match. The matches between Singapore and Bangladesh were played on 23rd July. Singapore defeated Bangladesh in 2 matches.

Overall performance of Singapore at the 2006 Davis Cup was disappointing. They got 6th place in the final standings of Group III of Asia/Oceania Zone. .
