Introduction

The Davis Cup is the most important international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin matches with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group I of Europe/Africa Zone. The team of Serbia and Montenegro included following players:

  • Janko Tipsarevic
  • Novak Djokovic
  • Ilija Bozoljac

Many European and African countries enthusiastically participated in this prestigious tournament. The countries that competed along with Serbia and Montenegro in Group I were Belgium, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco, Portugal and Ukraine.

Participation and Performance of Serbia and Montenegro in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 Davis Cup played directly in the 1st round. The matches between Israel and Serbia and Montenegro were played at Ramat Hasharon, Israel. Players from Serbia and Montenegro showed wonderful performance. Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia and Montenegro defeated Dudi Sela from Israel by 7-6, 2-6, 6-0 and 6-4. Israel’s Noam Okun was defeated by Novak Djokovic by 6-7, 6-7 and 2-6. Israel’s pair defeated pair of Serbia and Montenegro. Novak Djokovic defeated Dudi Sela from Israel by 6-1, 6-2 and 7-6. Janko Tipsarevic defeated Noam Okun by 7-6, 6-4. Serbia and Montenegro won 4 matches. Israel was able to win only one match. Serbia and Montenegro advanced to the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 7th to 9th April. Serbia and Montenegro played the matches against Great Britain at Glasgow, United Kingdom on Indoor Carpet. Greg Rusedski from Great Britain defeated Janko Tipsarevic from Serbia and Montenegro by 6-3, 6-7, 7-5 and 7-5. Great Britain’s Arvind Parmar was defeated by Novak Djokovic by 3-6, 2-6 and 5-7. Great Britain’s pair, Andy Murray and Greg Rusedski was defeated by pair of Serbia and Montenegro, Ilija Bozoljac and Nenad Zimonjic by 3-6, 6-3, 3-6 and 4-6. Novak Djokovic from Serbia and Montenegro defeated Greg Rusedski from Great Britain by 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 and 7-6. Great Britain’s Arvind Parmar defeated Ilija Bozoljac by 7-5, 6-4. Great Britain won 2 matches, while Serbia and Montenegro won 3 matches.

Serbia and Montenegro at the 2006 Davis Cup showed fantastic performance. As a result, they promoted to the World Group Play-off in 2007.
