Introduction

The Davis Cup is the most important international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Saudi Arabia at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Asia/Oceania Zone. Saudi Arabia sent following players:

  • Omar Al Thagib
  • Fahad Al Saad
  • Saleh Al Raajeh

The countries that competed in Group III were Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Philippines, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Players from Saudi Arabia took hard efforts to win the matches.

Participation and Performance of Saudi Arabia in the 2006 Davis Cup

Total 8 teams competed in Group III of Asia/Oceania Zone. They were divided into 2 groups. Saudi Arabia at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Iran, Bahrain and Bangladesh. Group A included Philippines, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Singapore. The matches were played at Manila Polo Club, Philippines from 19th to 23rd July. Saudi Arabia played the first set of matches against Iran. They had to face disappointment in these matches. They were defeated by Iran in all three matches. The matches between Saudi Arabia and Bahrain were played on 20th July. Players from Saudi Arabia played with determination. They won 2 matches, while Bahrain could win single match. Saudi Arabia played the matches against Bangladesh on 21st July. Saudi Arabia played well and defeated Bangladesh in 2 matches. Saudi Arabia qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Saudi Arabia played the matches against Philippines on 22nd July. They put poor performance and lost all three matches against Philippines. The matches between Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka were played on 23rd July. Sri Lanka defeated Saudi Arabia in 2 matches. Saudi Arabia could win single match.

Saudi Arabia at the 2006 Davis Cup showed average performance. They got 4th position in the final standings of Group III.
