Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin matches with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. San Marino at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone. The team of San Marino included following players:

The Group IV of Europe/Africa Zone included the countries such as Azerbaijan, Iceland, Malta, Madagascar, Mauritius, San Marino, Uganda and Senegal. Players from San Marino took hard efforts. They put good performance.

Participation and Performance of San Marino in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 8 teams to participate in Group IV. They were included in 2 groups. San Marino at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Iceland, Malta and Uganda. Group B included Mauritius, Madagascar, Azerbaijan and Senegal. But Senegal withdrew before the tournament. The matches were played at Marsa Sports Club, Marsa, Malta from 19th to 23rd July. San Marino played the first set of matches against Iceland. San Marino was defeated by Iceland in 2 matches. They were able to win just single match. The matches between San Marino and Uganda were played on 20th July. Players from San Marino showed good performance. They won 2 matches against Uganda. Uganda won just single match. San Marino won 2 matches against Malta. The matches were played on 21st July. San Marino qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. San Marino played the matches against Mauritius on 22nd July. San Marino had to face disappointment in these matches. They lost 2 matches against Mauritius. They could win just single match. The matches between San Marino and Madagascar were played on 23rd July. San Marino’s players put very disappointing performance. They were defeated by Madagascar in all three matches.

On the whole, performance of San Marino at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory. They got 4th position in the final standings of Group IV. They advanced to the Group III of Europe/Africa Zone in 2007.
