Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Russia at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in the World Group. Russian team included following players:

Russia was placed in the most important group. That was the World Group. Other countries that competed in the World Group were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Romania, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.
Participation and Performance of Russia in the 2006 Davis Cup
The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Russia at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against Netherlands at Amsterdam, Netherlands. Russian players showed wonderful performance. They defeated Netherlands in all five matches. They forwarded to the quarterfinals. The matches in the quarterfinals were played from 7th to 9th April. Russia played the matches against France at Pau, France. Russian players showed dominant performance. They won 4 matches against France. France was able to win just single match. Russia advanced to the semifinals. The matches in the semifinals were played from 22nd to 24th September. Russia played the matches against United States in the semifinals. They defeated United States in 3 matches. USA won 2 matches. As a result, Russia qualified for the final.
Russia played the final matches against Argentina at Moscow, Russia. The matches were played from 1st to 3rd December. Russia’s Nikolay Davydenko defeated Argentina’s Juan Ignacio Chela by 6-1, 6-2, 5-7 and 6-4. Argentina’s David Nalbandian defeated Russian Marat Safin by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4. Russian pair, Marat Safin and Dmitry Tursunov defeated Argentina’s pair, Agustin Calleri and David Nalbandian by 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. David Nalbandian defeated Nikolay Davydenko by 6-2, 6-2, 4-5 and 6-4. Marat Safin defeated Argentina’s Jose Acasuso by 6-3, 3-6, 6-3 and 7-6. Thus, Russia won the final of 2006 Davis Cup.
