Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin matches with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Romania at the 2006 Davis Cup was included in the World Group. Following players from Romania took part in the competition:

Romania was placed in the most important group. That was the World Group. Other countries that competed in the World Group were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Netherlands, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Participation and Performance of Romania in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the World Group were played in the Knock-out format. Romania at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against USA in the 1st round. The matches were held from 10th to 12th February, at La Jolla Beach and Tennis Club, USA. Romania’s Andrei Pavel defeated Andy Roddick from United States by 6-7, 2-6, 7-6, 6-2 and 6-4. James Blake from United States defeated Romania’s Victor Hanescu by 6-4, 7-6 and 6-2. Pair of United States, Bob Bryan and Mike Bryan defeated Romania’s pair, Victor Hanescu and Mike Bryan by 6-2. Andy Roddick defeated Romania’s Razvan Sabau by 6-3, 6-3 and 6-2. James Blake from United States defeated Romania’s Horia Tecau by 6-1, 7-5. Thus Romania was able to win just single match. Hence they competed in the World Group Play-offs. The matches were played from 22nd to 24th September. Romania played the matches against Korea at Bucharest, Romania. Romania’s players played with determination. They put excellent performance. They won 4 matches against South Korea.

Romania at the 2006 Davis Cup put satisfactory performance. Romania kept their position in the World Group in 2007.
