Qatar at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin matches with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Qatar at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group IV of Asia/Oceania Zone. Qatar sent following players to take part in the competition:

  • Sultan Khalfan Al Alawi
  • Abdullah Hajji
  • Faisal Al Jarboey
  • Feras Al-Naama
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

As tennis got world-wide popularity, many players from different countries were eager to take part in this important tennis tournament. Many Asian countries sent their players with great hopes. Players also took hard efforts to win the matches. Group IV of Asia/Oceania Zone included countries such as Iraq, Jordan, Myanmar, Oman, Qatar, Syria, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and United Arab Emirates.

Participation and Performance of Qatar in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 9 teams to participate in the tournament. They were divided into 2 groups. Qatar at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Oman, Iraq and Myanmar. Group B included United Arab Emirates, Syria, Tajikistan, Jordan and Turkmenistan. The matches were played from 5th to 9th April at Al Hussein Tennis Club, Amman, Jordan. Qatar played the first set of matches against Iraq. Qatar’s players could not perform well. They were defeated by Iraq in 2 matches. They were able to win single match. The matches between Qatar and Myanmar were played on 7th April. Qatar again had to face disappointment. They were defeated by Myanmar in 2 matches. Qatar played the matches against Oman on 9th April. Qatar’s players put poor performance. They lost all the three matches against Oman.

On the whole, performance of Qatar at the 2006 Davis Cup was very disappointing. They got the last position in the final standings of Group A.
