Puerto Rico at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Puerto Rico at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Americas Zone. Puerto Rico’s team included following players:

  • Gabriel Montilla
  • Gilberto Alvarez
  • Ricardo Gonzalez-Diaz
  • Jorge Rangel
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Following countries competed in group III: Bahamas, Costa Rica, Cuba, El Salvador, Haiti, Honduras, Puerto Rico and Trinidad and Tobago. Players of Puerto Rico gave tough fight against opponent players.

Participation and Performance of Puerto Rico in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were 8 teams to participate in Group III. They were divided into 2 groups. Puerto Rico at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Bahamas, Honduras and Trinidad and Tobago. Group B included Cuba, El Salvador, Costa Rica and Haiti. The matches were played from 14th to 18th June at Maya Country Club, Santa Tecla, El Salvador. Puerto Rico played the first set of matches against Bahamas. Puerto Rico had to face disappointment in these matches. They were defeated by Bahamas in all three matches. The matches between Puerto Rico and Honduras were played on 15th June. Players of Puerto Rico played with determination. They won all the three matches against Honduras. Puerto Rico again showed wonderful performance against Trinidad and Tobago. They defeated Trinidad and Tobago in all matches. Puerto Rico qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Puerto Rico played the matches against Cuba on 17th June. Puerto Rico had to face disappointment in these matches. They were able to win just single match. Cuba won 2 matches. The matches between Puerto Rico and El Salvador were played on 18th June. Puerto Rico was defeated by El Salvador in 2 matches. They could win single match.

Puerto Rico at the 2006 Davis Cup showed satisfactory performance. They achieved 4th place in the final standings of Group III.
