Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Portugal at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group I of Europe/Africa Zone. Following players from Portugal competed in Group I:

The countries that participated along with Portugal in Group I were Belgium, Czech Republic, Great Britain, Israel, Italy, Luxembourg, Morocco, Ukraine and Serbia and Montenegro. Players from Portugal gave tough fight against the players from other countries.

Participation and Performance of Portugal in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the 1st round were played from 10th to 12th February. Portugal at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Luxembourg at Esch/Alzette, Luxembourg. Portugal’s Rui Machado defeated Luxembourg’s Laurent Bram by 7-5, 6-4 and 6-2. Gilles Muller from Luxembourg defeated Portugal’s Frederico Gil by 6-2, 6-1 and 6-4. Pair of Luxembourg defeated Portugal’s pair by 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 and 6-1. Gilles Muller defeated Rui Machado by 7-6, 7-6 and 6-1. Gilles Kremer defeated Goncalo Nicau from Portugal by 6-7, 6-4 and 6-4. Thus, Portugal lost 4 matches against Luxembourg. Portugal forwarded to the 1st round play-offs. The matches were played from 21st to 23rd July. Portugal received ‘Bye’ from the opponent team. Portugal advanced to the 2nd round play-offs. Portugal played the matches against Morocco from 22nd to 24th September. Morocco’s Rabie Chaki defeated Goncalo Nicau by 4-6, 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 and 12-10. Frederico Gil defeated Morocco’s Mehdi Tahiri by 6-2, 6-4 and 6-2. Portugal’s pair defeated Morocco’s pair by 6-1, 6-3 and 6-1. Frederico Gil defeated Rabie Chaki by 1-6, 7-5, 6-1 and 7-6. Mehdi Tahiri defeated Portugal’s Pedro Sousa by 7-6, 4-6 and 6-2. Portugal won 3 matches.

On the whole, performance of Portugal at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
