Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Poland at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group II of Europe/Africa Zone. Poland’s team included following players:

  • Marcin Matkowski
  • Mariusz Fyrstenberg
  • Lukasz Kubot
  • Michal Przysiezny

Poland was included in Group II along with Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Latvia, Macedonia, Norway, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe.

Participation and Performance of Poland in the 2006 Davis Cup

Poland at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Latvia in the first round. The matches were played at Poznan, Poland, from 7th to 9th April. Poland’s Michal Przysiezny defeated Ernests Gulbis by 3-6, 7-6, 7-6 and 7-6. Lukasz Kubot from Poland defeated Latvia’s Andis Juska by 6-4, 7-6, 6-7, 3-6 and 8-6. Poland’s pair defeated Latvia’s pair by 6-3, 7-6 and 6-1. Poland’s Mariusz Fyrstenberg defeated Deniss Pavlovs by 6-3, 6-2. Michal Przysiezny defeated Karlis Lejnieks by 6-2, 7-6. Thus, Poland won all the five matches against Latvia in the first round. They forwarded to the 2nd round. The matches in the 2nd round were played from 21st to 23rd July. Poland played the matches against Georgia at Gdynia, Poland on clay court. Georgia’s Irakli Labadze defeated Poland’s Michal Przysiezny by 3-6, 6-3, 6-4 and 6-4. Lukasz Kubot defeated Georgia’s Lado Chikhladze by 7-5, 6-4 and 6-2. Poland’s pair, Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski defeated Georgia’s pair, Lado Chikhladze and Irakli Labadze by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-4. Irakli Labadze defeated Lukasz Kubot by 4-6, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 and 6-4. Lado Chikhladze defeated Mariusz Fyrstenberg by 7-5, 7-6 and 7-6. Poland could win 2 matches. Hence they could not advance to the 3rd round.
