Philippines at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Philippines at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Asia/Oceania Zone. Following players from Philippines competed in the competition:

The countries in the Group III, along with Philippines were Bahrain, Bangladesh, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. Players of Philippines took hard efforts. They showed wonderful performance.

Participation and Performance of Philippines in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 8 teams to compete in the Group III. They were divided into 2 groups. Philippines at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Singapore. Group B included Iran, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain and Bangladesh. The matches were played at Manila Polo Club, Makati City, Manila, Philippines. They were held from 19th to 23rd July. Philippines played the first set of matches against Sri Lanka. Players of Philippines showed wonderful performance. They won all the three matches against Sri Lanka. The matches between Philippines and Singapore were played on 20th July. Players of Philippines maintained their performance. They defeated Singapore in all matches. Philippines didn’t give an opportunity to Vietnam to win a single match. The matches were played on 21st July. Philippines won by 3-0. Philippines qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round due to their magnificent performance. Philippines played the matches against Saudi Arabia on 22nd July. Players of Philippines again put good performance. They defeated Saudi Arabia in all the three matches. The matches between Philippines and Iran were played on 23rd July. Philippines won all matches against Iran.

Overall performance of Philippines at the 2006 Davis Cup was fabulous. They showed dominant performance through-out the tournament. As a result, they achieved the 1st position in the final standings of Group III. Philippines was promoted to Group II of Asia/Oceania Zone in 2007.
