Peru at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Peru at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group I of Americas Zone. Namibia’s team included following players:

  • Ivan Miranda
  • Leonardo Ramirez
  • William Lock
  • Matias Silva
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Tennis got world-wide popularity. The number of participating countries was increasing day-to day. Many players from Americas Zone competed in the tournament. Peru was included in Group I of Americas Zone along with Brazil, Canada, Ecuador, Mexico and Venezuela.

Participation and Performance of Peru in the 2006 Davis Cup

Peru at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Brazil in the 1st round. The matches were played at Estadio Asia, Peru from 10th to 12th February. Brazil’s Flavio Saretta defeated Peru’s Ivan Miranda by 6-2, 6-2 and 6-3. Peru’s Luis Horna defeated Brazil’s Ricardo Mello by 6-4, 6-4 and 6-4. Brazil’s pair, Gustavo Kuerten and Andre SA defeated Peru’s pair, Luis Horna and Ivan Miranda by 4-6, 7-6, 6-4, 5-7 and 6-3. Luis Horna defeated Flavio Saretta by 6-7, 6-3, 6-2 and 6-2. Ricardo Mello defeated Ivan Miranda by 7-6, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-2. Brazil won 3 matches. Peru was able to win 2 matches. Hence they could not advance to the 2nd round. Peru played the matches against Ecuador in the 1st Play-off round. The matches were played at Lima, Peru, from 21st to 23rd July. Peru’s Matias Silva defeated Ecuador’s Carlos Avellan by 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 and 6-2. Ivan Miranda defeated Julio-Cesar Campozano by 7-5, 6-4 and 6-3. Peru’s pair defeated Ecuador’s pair by 6-4, 7-5 and 6-2. Peru’s William Lock defeated Jose Zunino by 6-4, 6-0. Ecuador’s Juan-Andres Gomez defeated Peru’s Leonardo Ramirez by 6-1, 6-2. Peru won 4 matches.

On the whole, Peru at the 2006 Davis Cup showed good performance.
