Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Panama at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group IV of Americas Zone. Team of Panama included following players:

Tennis became the most popular game in the world of sports. Many players from different countries enthusiastically competed in this premier international tennis tournament. The Group IV of Americas Zone comprised following countries: Barbados, Bermuda, Panama, Saint Lucia and US Virgin Islands.

Participation and Performance of Chile in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Group IV took place at Maya Country Club, Santa Tecla, El Salvador. The matches were played from 14th to 18th June. There were total 5 teams to compete in the round-robin tournament. Panama at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against St. Lucia on 15th June. Panama’s players showed good performance. They won 2 matches against St. Lucia. The matches between Panama and Bermuda were played on 16th June. Panama’s players played with determination. They won all three matches against Bermuda. Panama played the matches against US Virgin Islands on 17th June. Panama defeated US Virgin Islands in 2 matches. They lost a single match against US Virgin Islands. Panama had to face disappointment in the matches against Barbados. They were defeated by Barbados in 2 matches. They were able to win just single match.

On the whole, performance of Panama at the 2006 Davis Cup was magnificent. They got 2nd position in the final standings of Group IV. As a result, they advanced to the Group III of Americas Zone in 2007.
