Pakistan at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered to be the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. All regional zones were divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Pakistan at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group I of Asia/Oceania Zone. Pakistan’s team included following players:

  • Asim Shafik
  • Aqeel Khan
  • Aisam Qureshi
  • Jalil Khan
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Many Asian countries sent their players to take part in the 2006 Davis Cup. They were placed in 4 groups. Group I included countries such as China, Chinese Taipei, India, Japan, South Korea, Pakistan, Thailand and Uzbekistan.

Participation and Performance of Pakistan in the 2006 Davis Cup

Pakistan at the 2006 Davis Cup played the set of matches against Chinese Taipei at Taipei Tennis Club, Chinese Taipei from 10th to 12th February. Pakistan’s Aisam Qureshi defeated Ti Chen from Chinese Taipei by 6-2, 6-3 and 6-4. Yeu-Tzuoo Wang from Chinese Taipei defeated Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan by 6-2, 6-4 and 6-4. Pakistan’s pair, Aqeel Khan and Aisam Qureshi defeated Yeu-Tzuoo Wang and Chu-Huan Yi by 1-6, 7-6, 6-4, 6-7 and 9-7. Yeu-Tzuoo Wang defeated Aisam Qureshi by 6-1, 6-3 and 6-3. Ti Chen defeated Aqeel Khan by 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 and 6-3. Thus Chinese Taipei won 3 matches, while Pakistan won 2 matches. Hence Pakistan could not advance to the 2nd round. Pakistan played the matches against India in the 1st Play-off round. The matches were played at Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai, India from 7th to 9th April. Pakistan’s Aisam Qureshi defeated India’s Rohan Bopanna by 7-6, 6-4 and 6-4. India’s Prakash Amritraj defeated Pakistan’s Aqeel Khan by 7-6, 7-6 and 6-4. Indian pair, Mahesh Bhupathi and Leander Paes defeated Pakistan’s pair, Jalil Khan and Asim Shafik by 6-2, 6-3 and 6-1. Aisam Qureshi defeated Prakash Amritraj by 6-2, 6-4, 3-6 and 6-3. Leander Paes defeated Aqeel Khan by 6-4, 7-6, 3-6, 0-6 and 6-1. Pakistan could win 2 matches, while India won 3 matches.
Pakistan played the matches against China in the 2nd Play-off round. The matches were played from 22nd to 24th September. Pakistan’s players put very poor performance. They lost all five matches against China.

Pakistan at the 2006 Davis Cup showed very disappointing performance. Hence Pakistan was demoted to Group II in 2007.
