Norway at the 2006 Davis Cup

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The final took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Norway at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group II of Europe/Africa Zone. Norway’s team included following players:

  • Jan-Frode Andersen
  • Stian Boretti
  • Erling Tveit
  • Carl Sundberg


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The countries that participated in the Davis Cup along with Norway in the group II of the Europe/Africa zone were as follows: Algeria, Bulgaria, Cyprus, Egypt, Finland, Georgia, Greece, Ireland, Latvia, Macedonia, Hungary, Poland, Slovenia, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The players from Hungary gave a tough fight to all the players from these countries.

Participation and Performance of Norway in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the 1st round were played from 7th to 9th April 2006. Norway at the 2006 Davis Cup played the first set of matches against Zimbabwe at Harare, Zimbabwe. Norway’s Jan-Frode Andersen defeated Zimbabwe’s Genius Chidzikwe by 6-4, 6-2, 5-7 and 7-6. Norway’s Stian Boretti defeated Gwinyai Tongoona by 6-0, 6-3 and 6-3. Zimbabwe’s pair, Genius Chidzikwe and Gwinyai Tongoona defeated Norway’s Jan-Frode Andersen and Stian Boretti by 6-2, 3-6 and 6-4. Norway’s Stian Boretti defeated Zimbabwe’s Genius Chidzikwe by 4-6, 7-5, 7-5, 3-6 and 6-3. Norway’s Carl Sundberg defeated Zimbabwe’s Stefan D’Almeida by 6-3, 6-1. Norway won 4 matches. Norway advanced to the 2nd round.
The 2nd round matches were played from 21st to 23rd July 2006. Norway played the matches against Macedonia, F.Y.R. at Oslo Tennisklubb, Norway. Macedonia’s Predrag Rusevski defeated Norway’s Stian Boretti by 6-2, 6-0 and 1-0. Norway’s Jan-Frode Andersen defeated Macedonia’s Lazar Magdincev by 4-6, 6-3, 7-5, 3-6 and 6-2. Macedonia’s pair defeated Norway’s pair by 6-4, 7-6 and 6-3. Norway’s Erling Tveit was defeated by Macedonia’s Lazar Magdincev by 4-6, 7-5, 2-6, 7-6 and 2-6. Carl Sundberg defeated Macedonia’s Dimitar Grabuloski by 7-6, 6-4. Norway won 2 matches, while Macedonia won 3 matches. Hence Norway could not forward to the 3rd round.

On the whole, performance of Norway at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
