Nigeria at the 2006 Davis Cup.

Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Nigeria at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone. Nigeria’s team included following players:

  • Jonathan Igbinovia
  • Sunday Maku
  • Abdul-Mumin Babalola
  • Lawal Shehu
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone were played in two venues. The countries that played the matches in Venue 1 were Andorra, Armenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco, Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following countries played the matches at Venue 2: Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Nigeria, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Nigeria in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in group III were played at BTA Centre (Notswane Courts), Gaborone, Botswana on the hard court. The matches were held from 26th to 30th July. Total 8 nations competed. They were divided into two groups. Nigeria at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group B along with Ghana, Cote D’lvoire and Botswana. Group A included Denmark, Namibia, Tunisia and Rwanda. Nigeria played the first set of matches against Ghana. Nigerian players showed good performance. They won 2 matches against Ghana. The matches between Nigeria and Cote D’lvoire were played on 27th July. Nigeria’s players showed wonderful performance. They defeated Cote D’lvoire in all three matches. Nigeria had to face disappointment in the matches against Botswana. They lost in all three matches against Botswana. Nigeria qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Nigeria played the set of matches against Denmark on 29th July. Nigerian players couldn’t play well. They were defeated by Denmark in 2 matches. They were able to win single match. The matches between Nigeria and Namibia were played on 30th July. Nigeria won 2 matches, while Namibia won single match.

Overall performance of Nigeria at the 2006 Davis Cup was remarkable. Hence they advanced to the Group II in 2007.
