Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Each regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Netherlands at the 2006 Davis Cup competed in the most important World Group. Netherlands’s team included following players:

  • Peter Wessels
  • Rogier Wassen
  • John Van Lottum
  • Raemon Sluiter
  • Melle Van Gemerden
  • Jesse Huta-Galung
  • Robin Haase


Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

Netherlands was included in the World Group. Total 16 teams competed in the world Group. Other countries to participate in the World Group were Argentina, Australia, Austria, Belarus, Chile, Croatia, France, Germany, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and United States.

Participation and Performance of Netherlands in the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in the first round were played from 10th to 12th February. Netherlands at the 2006 Davis Cup played the matches against Russia at Amsterdam, Holland. Players from Netherlands could not show good performance. Russia’s Dmitry Tursunov defeated Raemon Sluiter from Netherlands by 6-7, 6-4, 7-6 and 7-6. Russian Nikolay Davydenko defeated Melle Van Gemerden from Netherlands by 7-6, 7-5 and 6-4. Russian pair defeated pair of Netherlands by 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Russia’s Igor Andreev defeated Jesse Huta-Galung from Netherlands by 6-3, 4-6 and 7-6. Dmitry Tursunov defeated Melle Van Gemerden by 7-6, 7-6. Thus, Netherlands lost all five matches against Russia. Hence they didn’t qualify for the quarterfinals. They played the matches in the World Group Play-offs. The matches were held from 22nd to 24th September. Netherlands played the matches against Czech Republic. Players of Netherlands again had to face disappointment. They could win just single match. Czech Republic won 4 matches.

Netherlands at the 2006 Davis Cup was relegated to Zonal Group I in 2007 due to their poor performance.
