Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. There were 16 teams to compete in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Netherlands Antilles at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group II of Americas Zone. Netherlands Antilles sent following players:

  • Jean-Julien Rojer
  • Alexander Blom
  • Rasid Winklaar

Netherlands Antilles was placed in Group II of Americas Zone along with Bolivia, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Guatemala, Jamaica, Paraguay and Uruguay. Players from Netherlands Antilles tried their best to win the matches.

Participation and Performance of Netherlands Antilles in the 2006 Davis Cup

Netherlands Antilles at the 2006 Davis Cup directly qualified for the first round. The matches in the 1st round were played from 10th to 12th February. Netherlands Antilles played the first set of matches against Guatemala at Emmastad, Curacao. Jean-Julien Rojer from Netherlands Antilles defeated Israel Morales from Guatemala by 6-3, 6-2 and 6-1. Rasid Winklaar was defeated by Cristian Paiz from Guatemala by 6-3, 4-6, 6-7, 7-5 and 4-6. Pair of Raoul Behr and Jean-Julien Rojer defeated pair of Cristian Paiz and Luis Perez-Chete by 6-4, 7-6 and 6-3. Jean-Julien Rojer from Netherlands Antilles defeated Cristian Paiz from Guatemala by 6-1, 6-2 and 6-3. Guatemala was able to win 2 matches. Netherlands Antilles won 3 matches. Netherlands Antilles advanced to the 2nd round. The 2nd round matches were played from 7th to 9th April. Netherlands Antilles played the matches against Dominican Republic at Emmastad, Curacao. Jean-Julien Rojer defeated Victor Estrella from Dominican Republic. Jhonson Garcia from Dominican Republic defeated Alexander Blom by 6-0, 6-3 and 6-1. Pair of Dominican Republic defeated pair of Netherlands Antilles by 7-6, 6-4 and 6-4. Jhonson Garcia was defeated by Jean-Julien Rojer by 3-6, 6-3, 7-6, 2-6 and 4-6. Victor Estrella defeated Rasid Winklaar by 6-2, 6-3 and 7-5. Netherlands Antilles won 2 matches, while Dominican Republic won 3 matches. Netherlands Antilles didn’t qualify for the 3rd round.

On the whole, performance of Netherlands Antilles at the 2006 Davis Cup was satisfactory.
