Introduction

The Davis Cup is considered as the premier international tennis event for men. It is the largest annual international tennis competition. The Davis Cup is organized by the International Tennis Federation. It is played in a knock-out format. The 2006 Davis Cup was the 95th edition of this prestigious tournament. 16 teams competed in the World Group. Other 125 nations played in regional zones. They were Americas Zone, Asia/Oceania Zone and Europe/Africa Zone. The World Group consisted of a four-round knockout tournament. Every regional zone was divided into four groups.

 

Group I and Group II played knockout tournaments. Group III and IV played round-robin tournaments with promotion and relegation. The finals took place from 1st to 3rd December at Moscow, Russia. Namibia at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone. Namibia’s team included following players:

  • Henrico Du Plessis
  • Johan Theron
  • Jurgens Strydom
  • Hermann Kuschke
Countries at the 2006 Davis Cup

The matches in Group III of Europe/Africa Zone were played in two venues. The countries that played the matches in Venue 1 were Andorra, Armenia, Estonia, Lithuania, Moldova, Monaco, Turkey and Bosnia and Herzegovina. Following countries played the matches at Venue 2: Botswana, Cote D’lvoire, Denmark, Ghana, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda and Tunisia.

Participation and Performance of Namibia in the 2006 Davis Cup

There were total 8 teams to play the matches at Venue 2. They were divided into 2 groups. Namibia at the 2006 Davis Cup was placed in Group A along with Denmark, Tunisia and Rwanda. Group B included Nigeria, Ghana, Cote D’lvoire and Botswana. The matches were played at BTA Centre (Notswane Courts), Gaborone, Botswana from 26th to 30th July. Namibia played the first set of matches against Tunisia. Namibia defeated Tunisia in 2 matches. Tunisia won single match. The matches between Namibia and Denmark were played on 27th July. Namibia had to face disappointment in these matches. They lost in all the matches against Denmark. Namibia’s players showed excellent performance in the matches against Rwanda. They won all three matches against Rwanda. Namibia qualified for the 1st to 4th Play-off round. Namibia played the matches against Ghana on 29th July. Namibia’s performance was disappointing. They were defeated by Ghana in all three matches. Namibia lost 2 matches against Nigeria.

Namibia at the 2006 Davis Cup showed average performance. They got 4th position in the final standings of Group III of Europe/Africa Zone.
